The Legends League - Documentary

I first met Bryan Espiritu through my friends Gavin and Drex of The Remix Project and I immediately took an interest in his skills. He has a unique mix of grit and polish and It’s rare that you meet another artist that motivates you just by them merely doing what they do. Nothing is said, no speech, just their hard work on screen, paper, canvas etc. Bryan on occasion has allowed me the opportunity to be honest with him and give him fearless feedback that I hope has added insight or at least a merited point of view. We rarely talk but when we do I appreciate his attention. Kudos to him on this project as well as his constant growth as an artist and a man. Please take in his latest project - it’s a trailer for a short, documentary style film that a company called Eighteen Eighty approached him to do. I anxiously await the full-form piece.

Fabien Baron - Timeless Pages

tfc_fabienbaron In 1982, French born creative director Fabien Baron came to New York with the idea of staying just six months. He brought along his portfolio and within four days he had landed a top job at GQ magazine.

Shortly thereafter he was appointed creative director of Italian Vogue and began dividing his time between New York and Milan.

He returned to New York in 1990 to open his company Baron & Baron and guide the relaunch of Interview magazine.

In 1992 he became creative director or Harper’s Bazaar under its legendary editor-in-chief Liz Tilberis. His company Baron and Baron Inc, which he started back in 1990, has designed very high profile advertising campaigns for many high profile and leading names in fashion.

Baron is the creative director for Calvin Klein and has been responsible for some of Klein’s most controversial ad campaigns. He is additionally known for Madonna’s infamous ‘Sex’ book, consisting of his design and layout paired with the photography of Siung Fat Tjia.

Baron also designed the packaging for Madonna’s Erotica album and single. The book is largely presented in a style not far off from Andy Warhol’s works, namely the famous shot on the metallized plastic cover of the book (a colored reverse negative), which Madonna also used for the cover of her Erotica album.

Take some time to familiarize yourself with the body of his work here.

Timex - Expedition

tfc_timexexpeditionThe Timex Expedition is the world’s only collection of analog adventure instruments.

An exceptional and rare combination of cutting-edge outdoor technology in a sophisticated analog case. These three styles are exceptional and I appreciate the restrained approach to the styling. The palette, lines and form have a heritage feel and conjure up a traditional motif and sensibilities.

Now, simply pair these with a classic Toyota FJ, Gloverall Toggle Coat, Sorel 1964 Premium CVS Boots, some Caulfield Khaki’s, a J.Crew shawl neck knit sweater and you are ready for the urban adventure.

Cougar - Classic Canadiana

tfc_cougarboots1Cougar made footwear history in 1976 when it introduced a simple work boot-inspired winter boot for men, women and children known as the Pillow boot.

More than 8 million Canadians (myself included, although years after the launch) wore the caramel leather, calf-high, rubber-soled, lace-up with the red fleece lining that was fashion-forward in its time and became one of the few truly iconic items of apparel Canada has ever produced.

For adults the Pillow boot was the perfect warm, comfortable and durable boot for shoveling snow and navigating slush-filled winter streets.

For the country’s hundreds of thousands of teens, Cougar Pillow boots were pure fashion, worn loose-laced and open with red fleece-lined tongues flopping, regardless of the weather.

The newly revitalized Cougar has undergone a brand re-fresh with a clean, subtle visual identity as well as unique web presence and a tag-line that sums up their revised stance “For The World You Walk On. Love What You Wear”.

However, the unfortunate thing is that the Cougar Pillow is no where to be seen on the site? Cougar- how can this be?

I would love to have these on my feet this winter. With that said I think this could be a huge opportunity for a brand of great leverage like Little Burgundy to partner with this iconic Canadian. With all of their locations, dialed in taste-makers and suburban shopper alike would flock to scoop up a pair of these classics.

My fingers are crossed.

Infrared Inspiration

jordanspizikes_infrared_kanye_inspiration

Connecting the dots on inspiration is one of my favourite things to do. These Jordan Brand Spizike’s have the exact palette as Kanye’s recent batch of artwork for his ‘Good Friday’ releases. It’s always a hunch but somethings are just undeniable- inspiration comes from the things that surround us. Even what is on our feet.

Influencers - The Film

quote_jordan

INFLUENCERS focuses on what is commonly referred to as “Lifestyle Culture or Influential Young Adults Market” in the areas of music, fashion, and entertainment.
Written and Directed by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson, the filmmakers attempt to understand the essence of influence, what makes a person influential without taking a statistical or metric approach.

Obviously, trends are never the product of one individual but rather the result of factors that involve various people. They set out to meet some of these industry insiders and pioneers
who, despite working in the background, literally define mainstream culture and have them share their professional and personal experiences.

Agent D3 - Dominate Another Day

This incredible clip has overtones of The Die Hard series, Iron Man, Batman, and The Bourne series and brings to mind the classic music video of Notorious B.I.G. - Hypnotize. I’m loving the branding that was crafted in the allusion to Kobe, Dwight Howard and the Big 3 in Boston and Kevin Hart is a perfect “Alfred” counterpoint to Dwayne Wades dry, contained delivery. An instant classic.

A little known fact is that I exacto knifed out evert Nike print from 1988 onward thanks to my Dad’s subscription to Sports Illustrated. Call me Ekin. ;)
