Television.

Personally, Im a 90’s baby, in most ways I believe television raised me (please, don’t repeat that around my mother - she would kill me) but I feel most of my morals and lessons were taught to me through shows like Animaniacs, Dexter’s Laboratory, Rugrats, and the 2000s re-runs of Boy Meets World and Fresh Prince…I feel television is responsible for more than half of the pictures that come in my head as I create these character filled, universal, emotion driven stories that I call - ahem - MUSIC…I dont watch as much TV now that my journey has kept me busy but I am thankful for the moments that me and my Sony KV32S40 spent together…I feel I left her it with more inspiration than a broken heart would have given me… This video kinda says other-wise…

This is a video is a interpretation done by Beth Fulton. The inspiration comes from Todd Alcott’s poem, Television.

GQ - Torn and Frayed

tfc_denim_cobainI was on GQ today and noticed this image in one of the style guides illustrating that ripped and torn jeans are making a resurgence. Taking a cue from the days of Kurt Cobain and past grunge rockers of the 90’s it strikes me that the movement is in reaction to the over saturation of denim with every rinse, over-dye, whisker etc and the exhaustion of almsot every possibility being played out. (Really, how many ways can you re-interpret indigo before you get back to basics?). So in essence indigo wore out its welcome…literally. One again a testament that classics never wear out, even when they are worn out.

Lucky Strike - World Premiere

Lucky Strike Theatrical Trailer from LRB on Vimeo.

An opinion is not a point of view. Commentary is not commitment. Observation is not action. These words ring in my head each day as I strive to fulfill my civic and artistic potential. My heart is unfortunately bigger than my actions at times and I truly want need to assert myself in greater issues. I’m compelled to do so as I come from a family of strong civic/charity/minded individuals. With that being said I have had the pleasure of meeting and be-friending 2 passionate filmmakers that have made an indelible dent into political and pop-culture.

In the most epic Presidential Election of my lifetime, many of my friends took the trip to Washington for the Obama Inauguration to witness history unfold but Anthony Gagliardi and Lucas Baiano were a head of the pack and took hold of a moment and became apart of history in the process. They produced, shot, edited the indie documentary ‘Lucky Strike’.

They describe the film like this - “In the year of the youth vote, Lucky Strike from beginning to end is an incredible and fate-filled true story of how one student’s curious twist of events, which catapult him into the national political spotlight during the most historic American presidential campaign and how it unexpectedly changes his life. Follow the unpredictable moments which parallel the candidates race to the White House and in the process discover that what it takes to make a dream go from impossible to inevitable is believing in yourself.”

The incredible back-story to this is that after acquiring tickets to a Meet and Greet at a book lecture in Toronto with Bill Clinton, Lucas (filmed by Anthony) briefly met the former President to pitch an idea to make a campaign video for his wife Hillary Clinton. Lucas convinced Bill to let them do it and then produced a three minute video from the six hours of raw footage they were provided. The video has been since featured on Hillary Clinton’s official youth program/support sites; hillblazers.com.

Both Lucas & Anthony are making a follow-up documentary, about their experiences with the Clinton campaign and the video and the fellas are flying out to DC to premier their work as they have been awarded an Official Selection to the Washington Film Festival. Good luck guys!

Tag along for the follow and check out their site.

MTV - Music Television Print Ads

tfc_mtv_puffy

Back in the 1998 when the only reality show on TV was The Real World and the MTV network still played music videos (if you didn’t know, it stands for Music Television) and when platinum plaques were stacked by the dozens and diamonds glistened while champagne popped MTV enlisted a trio of Hip-Hop’s elite for a classic series of print ads. Only focussing on crop’d areas of each of their bodies, these 3 stars images are so well known that even a smile, arm and hairstyle make them instantaneous identifiable. The simplicity and clarity of the messaging paired with the graphic approach is vivid and left an indelible imprint on me. 10+ years later it still resonates. Here’s a quiz for those that can read between the lines…Can you see what connects each of these 3 stars?

Rachel Comey - Mens Shoes

If you’ve heard of Rachel Comey your probably familiar with her womens designs but at the same time she has been making mens shoes, some of which have earned her a cult following. The styles are kept classic yet all have a touch of something which makes them different whether its a ‘coloured sole or a mix of weird fabrics and materials’. I must admit I’ve been searching for a classic looking shoe for quite some time, even though I love sneakers it’s very important to have a variety, be it a pair of oxford’s or some desert boots. Also note that these won’t go out of style so when your purchasing your pair make sure that quality comes before price, my dad has had his for over 20 years. Check out the interview via The FADER.

B.D. Baggies New York

I had my first opportunity to check out the B.d Baggies collection at Holt Renfrew yesterday. Upon seeing the shirts I knew I had to have one. They are made from 100% pre laundered cloth and are as comfortable as your favourite tee. David Mullen (Save Khaki) has taken over and brought the brand to the forefront once again. If you didn’t know B.D. was the shirt to wear in the 80’s and its good to see they’re coming back. The fit is perfect and needs no tailoring, once my size is shipped in from the other Holt’s location i’ll be sure to put some pictures up.
